At The Orenco Station Hotel, we usually share our neighborhood through local guides and recommendations. This month, we’re sharing a guest story in their own words:
Seeing Orenco Station Differently
I thought I knew Orenco Station.
I had worked in the neighborhood for months, eaten at a few restaurants, and driven through more times than I could count. Then my wife and I spent a few nights at The Orenco Station Hotel while contractors worked on our house.
On our first evening, we headed out for a walk after dinner. Within twenty minutes, I realized I had completely missed what makes this neighborhood special.
We turned left out of the hotel’s front door, and a block later, found ourselves in Central Park. We only planned for a quick ten minute walk, but once we started wandering, we couldn’t stop. For more than an hour, we walked down whichever street looked interesting. Townhomes, condos, and houses each had their own character. Front porches glowed with warm light. Trees wrapped in twinkling lights lined the sidewalks. Neighbors walked dogs, chatted with friends, and enjoyed the evening air. It was just warm enough that a sweater was enough to keep us comfortable.
We never finished our conversation about work because we kept getting distracted by the unique character and architecture of each house we passed.
The neighborhood felt lively but peaceful. Even after the sun set, we felt safe to continue exploring. We kept finding ourselves surprised that this much charm was hidden in plain sight. Even though we weren’t far from home, we felt like we had been transported to a completely new city.
Exploring the Other Side
The next night, we headed in the opposite direction.
A block down, we found ourselves surrounded by restaurants with outdoor seating lining the sidewalks, cafés, patios, wine bars, and local shops. When we reached the plaza, joyful children were splashing in the fountain. We sat on the patio of Mazama Brewing, shared a flight of craft beer, watched the trains pass through the station, and asked ourselves how we could bottle this feeling and take it home.
By the time we returned to the hotel, we’d spent another evening exploring entirely on foot.
That became our routine during our stay. Each night, we’d set out with no agenda and discover something new.
A Reason to Come Back
What surprised me most was how much larger Orenco Station felt once I experienced it this way. From the hotel, you can spend hours exploring beautiful residential streets, parks, restaurants, plazas, and local businesses without ever needing to get in your car.
I had spent months visiting Orenco Station, but it took staying there to truly experience it.
Long after our stay ended, I’ve found myself trying to capture the feeling of walking hand in hand beneath the glow of the streetlights again, turning one more corner just to see what we’d find next. Most hotels give you a place to sleep, Orenco Station gave us a reason to come back.
